Loving Words of Rebuke

HIGHLIGHT: Proverbs 28:23 ~ Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor rather than one who has a flattering tongue.

EXPLAIN: The writer explains that there are reasons to rebuke a person. Rebuking is the action of expressing sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behavior or actions. There are moments when people do things they should not and they need corrected. Notice this is not about condemnation for someone's actions, or even an act caused by bitterness or anger. This is because their behavior (actions) were not n the proper way of acting.

The writer says that these people, who bring rebuke, will in the end gain favor more than someone who flatters. This is obviously the opposite of what we often think, believe or even how we act. Why is this? Rebuking is an act of love. It should come from a heart of love and be an attempt at helping someone to grow in the way they should act, react, think or consider.

Love, the writer would say, brings about transformation over and above flattery. Why? Flattery is often not a way of showing love, and especially if someone is not behaving or acting well. It is more of an attempt to disarm and deflect from the real issue at hand.

APPLY: So how do I live this one out? There are moments that I simply do not have the time, nor energy, to confront people. The key is found in relationship. Relationships help people to open up to rebuke because they recognize the actions coming from a heart that loves them and wants the best for them.

It is also important in the relationship to know the level of trust and love. There will be feelings of hurt, and especially at first. However, love will let the person know that the rebuke is not a personal condemnation but rather a heart that desires the best for the other person.

Relationships are always key in life and especially when tough words must be said. This doesn't mean you have to apologize profusely for what you say as you rebuke someone. Tough words simply mean to encourage a relationship to be renewed and encouraged.

RESPONSE:Lord, my I always see myself as an agent of love even when tough words of rebuke are required. Let my actions and my words, in every situation, cause people to look towards you and follow you ~ aways.
